Molly  0:00

Hi I'm Matthew and I'm Molly and this

Matthew Amster-Burton  0:06

is spelled bell to show where we cook something delicious. Eat it all and you can't have any

Molly  0:10

today we are talking about our top chips or in other words our favorite chips or the chips we like best or top chips. Everyone

Matthew Amster-Burton  0:20

knows the expression top chips like chips. Sounds British it reminds me of like Tom really does Topshop right? Yeah, like you've always you've always been top chips to me like that. I think Man United is top chips this year.

Molly  0:35

Excellent. Excellent. I feel like I learned on

Matthew Amster-Burton  0:37

top man like like a clothing store.

Molly  0:39

So yeah, Top Shop was the like the original I think and then top man is like the the spin off for men or like, you know the version from it. Like, like, do you remember the companies? Once again? I'm gonna reference something that is super current like, do you ever limited and limited to? I saw are they that old?

Matthew Amster-Burton  1:01

I remember Express.

Molly  1:02

Oh, yes Express. Oh, wow. Yes. Okay, well, anyway, it's like that. Just like that. Okay,

Matthew Amster-Burton  1:10

so now we find it on Oxford Street.

Molly  1:13

I think you'd find it in the high in the hot Oxford High Street. The

Matthew Amster-Burton  1:19

on the high street. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Maybe Kentish town.

Molly  1:25

How long can we go on with this? Let's start with it. Okay, so this episode is going to veer a bit away from our usual kind of thing in that we are kind of memory lane is kind of the route this episode. We're not gonna have a separate memory lane here.

Matthew Amster-Burton  1:41

Yeah, I mean, that's kind of like like England like Memory Lane wines throughout England. I like we're not talking about like English food on this episode at all. We just got onto this thing because you said Top Man

Molly  1:55

Yeah, Matthew, do you remember how like a million years ago on the show you coined the term garbage man is not in reference to someone who who collects waste? Yeah, no,

Matthew Amster-Burton  2:06

I think I did coined that term also. Like I've heard the term garbage man meaning somebody who picks up like your your domestic refuse. I came up with that.

Molly  2:13

Yeah, but you coined it in terms of someone who is just a heap of garbage themselves. Right? And I now find myself wanting to use it all the time. But I'm aware that like not everybody listens to this show. I mean, most people do

Matthew Amster-Burton  2:27

well that's that's unfortunate. Yeah. Anyway, what was I'm sure I wasn't the first person because like people were saying garbage person and I think I meant to say garbage person but it came out as garbage man and then I realized that was already a thing. I'm sure I wasn't the first person to do that. Yeah, but

Molly  2:43

you probably were okay. All right. So Matthew, we're going to be having a guest on soon is there anything we need to

Matthew Amster-Burton  2:50

do before then? No.

Molly  2:55

Matthew, do you do you want to do Ese's introduction? Okay. Okay, let's

Matthew Amster-Burton  2:59

let's see if it's false. This is true. You can stop me if anything I say is false. Okay. Stop laughing No, no, no, no, no. Okay. This is this is why I wanted to have essay on this all right. Ese Atawo is a comedian, actor and rapper based in Vancouver BC she's been on the flash and Legion but I know her for a recent periods on the appearance on the comedy podcast stopped podcasting yourself where as she made me laugh constantly and be talked about how much she loves chips. So I sent her a message right away and said so could you please come on spilled milk and talk to us about chips to as a tower. Welcome to spilled milk.

Ese Atawo  3:40

Ah, thank you for having me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I read chips I'm gonna guess.

Matthew Amster-Burton  3:46

Now we know like if we ever need to like lower you, we'll just like put a bag of chips like under a box with a stick. Yeah, though. I

Molly  3:53

feel like as we're about to be reminded, Canada has much better chips than we do. So I know Matthew, I think essay is going to be like, you know, doing some reverse chip learning here.

Matthew Amster-Burton  4:05

That's true.

Ese Atawo  4:06

come my way.

Molly  4:07

Wait, but before we start, I have to say so I was geeking out on your IMDB this morning.

Ese Atawo  4:12

Oh, please don't delay. I was a big

Molly  4:16

fan of Midnight Mass. And I was very excited to see that you were on midnight. Oh,

Ese Atawo  4:22

my God. Yes. Midnight Mass was so much. So much. Oh my god. Oh, and I hate the fact that I'm forgetting the director's name. Oh,

Molly  4:31

getting the director's name too. But I love that you were forgetting it. And you were even on the show.

Ese Atawo  4:36

Because he just called it was one of the best. Very small role but it was so much fun. I had so much fun. It was during COVID Very tight in like the strange COVID rule which was okay. But everybody had such a positive energy. When I guess was the first production during the whole COVID thing. So we were very strict with everybody was so positive and it was so positive.

Molly  5:02

Amazing so amazing and the lead guy Hamish or Hamish some Oh, that guy. That guy

Ese Atawo  5:12

was just sitting in between offset just trying to be cool with him like, Yeah, but the thing is we never knew we didn't know who was here like he was, you know? Oh that I didn't know at the time. Okay,

Matthew Amster-Burton  5:25

I have to admit I haven't seen the show. So I had to Google this guy, but he's, he's a good looking guy.

Ese Atawo  5:31

Oh, like not only is he good looking? He's funny. Like, he's, he's a good funny, like, real funny. Like, not like, I'm an attractive guy. Let me write like, real funny. It was hard to make

Molly  5:44

sure I love it.

Matthew Amster-Burton  5:46

I know. But watch the show. I'm just gonna be jealous of this guy.

Molly  5:49

But Matthew, Matthew, so Matthew doesn't like anything remotely horror II. So Matthew, I don't think you should watch it. I mean, it's really it's not that

Matthew Amster-Burton  5:57

I don't like it. It's that I too scared.

Molly  5:59

Yeah. You mean Matthew is such a tender heart.

Ese Atawo  6:03

It was fun, though. But it was really we joked a lot about all that like gory stuff that was happening. I met a woman on set who had a gory moment happened happen and she was so excited for it. She goes oh, I can't wait to die. She was so excited. I

Matthew Amster-Burton  6:18

don't know if I was ever asked on a show. Like I would love to die on TV. That would be awesome.

Molly  6:23

What if What if you just die but you're accidentally on TV? Is that like less fun?

Matthew Amster-Burton  6:29

No, no, no. I don't want to die on the news. I want to drama. Okay, let me specify here. That's right. Look at that cool guy.

Molly  6:46

That guy had such a good goatee. It's really a shame. He's gone

Matthew Amster-Burton  6:49

right. Arms gone and he's dead. Alright, so is changing his

Ese Atawo  6:57

arms made it but he did.

Molly  7:00

Well, but keeping his arm alive because he's got to be able to reach for the chips. Look how I brought that back. Okay, okay, here we go. So um, today we are here to talk with you essay about your top chips, your favorite chips. And this can you know we're gonna be talking about ours too. We kind of thought we do like a little round robin of talking about our favorite chips. Yeah, and this can be like current chips, past chips. You know, chips of Christmas Future.

Matthew Amster-Burton  7:33

We could pick a favorite chip that doesn't exist yet.

Molly  7:36

Yes. Okay. Yes. Okay. Well, Matthew, so how do we start this off?

Matthew Amster-Burton  7:41

I think I think we should. We should let the guest go first. All right.

Molly  7:44

No pressure for me. Like,

Ese Atawo  7:46

I'm Nigerian. I was born in Nigeria. Okay, and I moved to Canada when I was five. But I mean, we have like plantain chips, but we never I never grew up with chips, chips, potato chips. We probably did. But again, it was never in my memory. And the diversity back then was probably whatever. Anywho moving to Canada and living in Canada getting used to the food and the culture. And then I got into chips. Sure. My favorite chips, but I can't eat it all the time because it hurts my tongue. Ketchup chips.

Molly  8:18

Okay, wait a minute. So is this like Lay's or what brand? Any brand of ketchup chips

Ese Atawo  8:23

No. Lay's chips and Lay's if you're listening to this, you need to lower your prices there this is not right. How much

Matthew Amster-Burton  8:34

you're listening to this could you like sponsor this episode? As always,

Ese Atawo  8:38

please, lays I live for your chips I Lay's I live for your ketchup chips and Lay's I live for your slightly salted ruffles regular Oh yeah. Oh my god.

Matthew Amster-Burton  8:52

Oh my god. You remember when we did we did an episode? Oh yeah, absolutely no 479 for a bag it's probably more in Canada.

Ese Atawo  9:02

They stopped selling late or they stopped there's no lays in the grocery store is now released like supply chain has said no. We're not selling $10 chips until late lowers their prices then because Loblaws and major stores are not taking in new orders because they've hijacked the price. Wait, wait

Matthew Amster-Burton  9:24

take a stand on an important issue Canada, I think.

Ese Atawo  9:29

Yeah. Yeah. Justin Trudeau us.

Matthew Amster-Burton  9:34

We did an episode A while back where we just tasted plain potato chips. And Lay's was the runaway winner. We thought it was gonna be like you know, kettle chips or you know, something fancy. No. Lay's. Absolutely.

Ese Atawo  9:46

They just get basic so well

Molly  9:48

so so hold on. Okay, so the ketchup chips. I know that I've had them. But can you just for our US listeners who may never have had them. Can you just talk a little bit about like, do they taste like ketchup.

Ese Atawo  10:01

Yes and no and sometimes so it depends on your brand. Okay. I don't know how ways does it like I know a lot of Americans who do not like ketchup chips. They hate it like it's gross and I get it, but it's just like Lay's ketchup chip is like, it's, it's not sweet. Okay. tanky it has the tastes of ketchup and not intense catch it like not it's like sugar to catch up. But not sugary either.

Molly  10:29

So it's like I feel like it. It like kind of walks like a parallel line maybe to a barbecue chip, but without the smoke and with more Tang.

Ese Atawo  10:43

Yeah, we Yeah, thanks. Okay, present. Yes. And that's it. Yeah, okay. Yeah, but there's that acidic Ness can eat it every day. Okay. It can affect your tongue. Oh, god.

Molly  10:55

Okay. Okay, you've been warned. All right, Molly, you're up. Oh, okay. Okay. Well, so I want to start I want to start with with a memory lane chip or chip that I have not had in ages and a chip that also will screw with your tongue and that is Funyuns never have you've never had Funyuns? No. Okay, well, the so Funyuns are there. They're a ring shaped chip. They're meant to look like onion rings. They taste nothing like anything found in nature. And so when I when I listen. Nothing they are they're highly engineered. I love being this funny. So when I was in middle school, so I grew up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. And yeah, represent. And we had a vending machine kind of over next to the gym, like by the locker rooms and

Matthew Amster-Burton  11:59

oh, yeah, I know. I know the vending machine up. Yeah.

Molly  12:04

Yeah, yeah. So there was like, you know, food vending machine and a drink vending machine. And we were allowed to eat and drink in class, which now strikes me as what kind of amazing school

Ese Atawo  12:15

did you go to? Well,

Molly  12:16

so I went

I went to like a Montessori based school. Okay, so it was a private school.

Matthew Amster-Burton  12:28

It was very fancy Molly's driven me past it.

Molly  12:31

Oh, anyway. Molly's the truth comes out. I mean, I think all of our listeners have about me for a long time. But anyway, we one of the things that they do to empower young fancy children, children need to be empowered, is they allow you to eat and drink in class, assuming that you you know, don't allow it to disrupt your focus. Anyways, so we would get Orange Crush soda and finance and finance for like, like the chip to get in middle school. And the thing with Funyuns is they're kind of that like, that extremely like styrofoam me fried food, crunchy food texture. And so if you let one like melt on your tongue, it takes your taste buds away with it like it has a scouring effect.

Matthew Amster-Burton  13:29

So wait, wait, wait, wait.

Ese Atawo  13:32

Did you hear a smile but

Molly  13:33

it did you have to

Matthew Amster-Burton  13:34

let it melt on your tongue in order to not disrupt class and thereby show your empowerment? Oh,

Molly  13:40

oh, you know, it's hard to think of anything more

Matthew Amster-Burton  13:43

disruptive than then.

Molly  13:46

In class? Yeah. Yeah. No, there's no, there's nothing more disruptive. Yes, everyone knows. Um, no, I think that just at a certain point, if you really like the flavor of Funyuns if you like that, like highly unnatural flavor, which I do. Yeah, you can make it last longer by or you know, it's it's like different if you let it melt on your tongue as opposed to if you crunch it. So to all of my funny and eaters out there. Oh, well, like you said about ketchup chips sa I mean, they will destroy your tongue. And it's kind of worth it up to a certain point. It is.

Ese Atawo  14:21

Yeah, that

Matthew Amster-Burton  14:22

is weird. But I am also the kind of person who will sometimes like eat m&ms By sucking on them until the candy coating is gone, and they start to melt away.

Molly  14:30

I used to do that with sour patch kids when they first be me. Yes, I remember sitting in the movie theater, like sucking on them until my tongue was like, sore.

Matthew Amster-Burton  14:42

How do we how do any of us still have tongues after what we did as children?

Ese Atawo  14:46

Our tongues can talk our bodies

Matthew Amster-Burton  14:51

first, I mean they sort of can do that.

Molly  14:57

Okay, Matthew, what about you, Tom?

Matthew Amster-Burton  15:00

I'm gonna say ruffles, sour cream and cheddar. Maybe cheddar sour. I think I might have bought them. Let me let me reach into the secret chip bag.

Molly  15:10

So Matthew, we did this, is this a current favorite or go way back

Matthew Amster-Burton  15:15

it both. So I remember like when maybe when these were introduced I think I was in like elementary or middle school and like, there were a lot of moments in my childhood where suddenly all kids had to eat the same chip because like that was the cool chip of the moment. Yeah, yeah. sour cream and onion, which we'll probably talk about but cheddar and sour cream. I was skeptical of these because as a kid, I thought sour cream was gross. And I kind of still do, but these chips are so good. And like also like, why are they combining cheddar and sour cream? Is this like a natural combination? No, but doesn't sound that but they're fantastic. Like they've got they've got the tang like everything we talked about so far has some tang to it.

Molly  15:54

Matthew, do you feel like there is like a hurdle to get over when you eat these so the first? Well the first chip must be tolerated. Like the sour cream flavor is really sour, creamy. But then it's like then it's like, you know a free for all After you get past that first one.

Ese Atawo  16:16

Well, you just changed my mind of like, the certain foods that I'm just like, I don't want to eat it because it's a hurdle to eat. It's a hurdle food.

Matthew Amster-Burton  16:26

So like, like, what? Because I was gonna say no, it's a chip. Like I just reach in and start eating that there's no hurdle.

Molly  16:32

But you yourself don't like sour cream, Matthew. But it's,

Matthew Amster-Burton  16:35

like cold creaminess that I don't like. And like if the chip was cold and creamy. Yes, that would. That would represent a hurdle for sure. But like in chip form, no, it's okay.

Molly  16:48

Okay. Okay. What are some hurdle foods for USA?

Ese Atawo  16:51

Oh my God, so many vegetables? Oh, no foods. I'm like, oh, okay, because I have to, but I'm just like, Oh my goodness. I don't like it.

Molly  17:00

Does it get any easier? Like, you know, the more you the more you eat?

Ese Atawo  17:04

I guess I think I just trained my body now just to do it. Um, but yeah, I'm gonna recognize now when I bought it, so like, I don't want to eat this. Actually. Do you know what these are? I also have hurdle snacks. I'm like, I'm a person that likes what I like. Yeah, I like ketchup chips. Lay's lightly salted regular plain chips. Cool Ranch Doritos. Oh, yeah. So those,

Molly  17:27

those have a little bit of a buttermilk. Like dairy. Yeah,

Ese Atawo  17:32

Mm hmm. Um, but then I don't do sour cream. But I can sometimes do sour cream and onions. Like rarely, if I'm feeling foreign. I'm like,

Molly  17:42

Yeah, okay.

Matthew Amster-Burton  17:43

It's just like, I'm not me today.

Ese Atawo  17:45

I'm not mean today. Natasha. Natasha. And that's when I have it.

Matthew Amster-Burton  17:51

Okay, so here's the thing I have to admit, like when you talk about ketchup chips, I already already said I'm afraid of horror movies. And now you also have to know that I don't like ketchup. It's a big hurdle food. For me. I like this phrase hurdle food and I'm going to steal it from you and use it forever. I've been trying to train myself to tolerate ketchup just because it's so common and like, I wish I liked it. And I'm making a little bit of progress. And now I want to try ketchup chips.

Ese Atawo  18:14

Try it. It is vinegary. It's very like it leads to this. Vinegar, Salt Vinegar family. Just so you know. But also Ketchup. Ketchup in itself. I'm finding out as a 37 year old woman 38 Tomato. Oh, yes. That you can make your own ketchup and you can like because I don't like the taste of ketchup. Okay, wow. Okay, I'm like,

Molly  18:37

You buried the lede here. You don't like the taste of ketchup and yet the first chip that you mentioned is a ketchup chip. Okay, so interesting. Yeah, okay. Yeah. What about aren't though aren't they're like, oh gosh, what is it called? Like all flavor or all so

Matthew Amster-Burton  18:52

I'll drag dress. Oh, for sure. Oh,

Ese Atawo  18:56

dress reminds me of you know, like, like a summer loving boyfriend. You know? Like, like He's great. He's great. He's great. He's great. I just can't commit to him and when I want I want to commit to him. I like I forgot about him like all dress was good you know he's good leg. Good leg

Molly  19:17

really, really smooth. I see what you

Ese Atawo  19:21

wave Laura your prices?

Matthew Amster-Burton  19:26

Is he because he being all dressed like comes on too strong.

Ese Atawo  19:30

He dies but he's like he's trying like yeah, trying to fit in and he does fit in like people do like him. I think he just tries too hard. Just be yourself.

Matthew Amster-Burton  19:39

But you're right because like we only recently like in the last few years have gotten all dressed chips on the on the US side of the border. And like I like them and I will buy them and then like forget about them and buy a year later. Why Yeah,

Ese Atawo  19:53

yeah. And when I see it, I'm like, I'll have it. Oh, yeah, I haven't yet.

Molly  19:58

It makes. I like this. Summer boyfriend analogy Matthew, you have a friend now, and it's an all dress chip. Wow, Matthew, you're just smiling. You're like, oh, no, no,

Matthew Amster-Burton  20:08

no. Yeah.

Molly  20:10

Okay. Okay.

Matthew Amster-Burton  20:11

No Yes like I made my chip a boyfriend is my chip no chip is my boy.

Ese Atawo  20:17

I've been dating nothing but chips. Chips. But are they

Matthew Amster-Burton  20:21

good late for the show? Laurie is fine with it. Very good lace. Yes. Oh, they're great

Molly  20:26

ways. Oh, good. Good, but very high

Ese Atawo  20:29

prices.

Matthew Amster-Burton  20:34

I think it's your turn to pick a chip, which I just mentioned, like seven different subjects. Feel free to pick one of those.

Ese Atawo  20:40

Pick a chip pick a chip, any chip. Oh my god pick a chip pick. Pick a chip. Ooh, I'm getting into but I don't love it because I don't like the greasiness of it. Kettle Chips. Okay. Yeah, like I like it. I like it. I like how the potatoes are formed. They hit different they crunch different. The salting is different and seems fresh, like fresh salt. Looks good. But I just don't like the grease Enos of it.

Matthew Amster-Burton  21:05

Yeah, it is a different a different kind of thing. I am always a big fan of jalapeno kettle chips.

Molly  21:10

Yeah, the onus is, I'm really glad you mentioned that because I had this experience recently where I like I had bought a couple bags of chips at once. And I put one of them like down by the washing machine and I when I put it

but I put them down with the top down when I brought them up to eat them and I opened them I opened the top and then it was like all this grease at the top. Like I had, you know, like, usually the grease is waiting for me at the bottom. And by the time I get down there I can like choose to throw it away. But this time, I had to get through the grease to even like get to the first chip. And that was really intense.

Matthew Amster-Burton  22:04

I just had this this epiphany moment where I was trying to figure out what did you mean when you said you put the chips with the top down? All I could think of was like a convertible. Like, or like did you just mean you rolled up the top of the bag? No, you put the bag upside upside next to the washing machine. Oh, God, sorry. I have sounds like you're performing some sort of ritual like you have the chips upside down in the middle of this symbol next to the washing machine. Yeah,

Molly  22:28

no, I put them with like the I put them upside down so that then when I opened the little notch at the top of the bag, it was like a rib grease flowed out before I could get any chips and that was not cool. But I do love kettle chips

Matthew Amster-Burton  22:42

like the Billy Joel Alba river of Greece. It was worth waiting to jump in with that joke. Yeah,

Ese Atawo  22:47

thank you. Thanks. Okay, but wait, no, that sounds good. Anyway,

Matthew Amster-Burton  22:52

I am gonna pick a Canadian chip Miss Vickie's salt and malt vinegar. What the f is that? I don't even know if they still make them. I don't think so. These were these were the chips that my wife and I discovered on our honeymoon. We honeymoon in Victoria BC in 1996. That's how old I am. And my. So we Yes, I'm 96 years old. And we just bought this bag of chips. And we were like these are good. Like this malt vinegar reminds us of fish and chips. And you know, it just it was the most romantic part of the whole trip. bonding over

Molly  23:34

these chips. Have you had them since? Are they

Matthew Amster-Burton  23:37

good periodically? Definitely not in the last few years. Yeah, they totally are. They're great. I hope they still make them.

Molly  23:42

Okay. Okay.

Ese Atawo  23:44

I'll try and find them for myself. Yeah, so be like, okay,

Matthew Amster-Burton  23:46

yeah, if you like a salt and vinegar chip, I highly recommend them.

Ese Atawo  23:50

That's another boyfriend. That's a French boy. Yeah, for sure. And those like, definitely come on strong there. Yeah, they're too strong. I like them. But I'm just like, okay, not ready.

Matthew Amster-Burton  24:00

Yeah, no, so nice. I will buy a whole bag, like a big bag of salt and vinegar. And then like about a third of the way through the bag. I'm like, I've had a lot of vinegar now. Rice

Molly  24:18

so what about like puffed kinds of chips? You know, I'm thinking like, you know what I mean?

Ese Atawo  24:23

i Yes, I do know what you mean. Molly. Thank you for asking. Um, Molly. I used to be against puff chips. I was like, no, no, no, no, I won't go. Cuz I'm like, give me that crunch. Why are we pretending to be a chip when I have no crunch chips need to have French in my head. And then I tore my Achilles tendon. December 26 2021 I know. I'm fine. I'm good. I'll recover anywho my friend somehow bought Cheetos, Cheetos. I hated them as chill as a child. But I was like, whatever. Let me just she bought it can be mean. So I had one and I was like, Excuse me, what's this? And I just, I just liked it. I just liked it.

Molly  25:04

So So you did your friends set up like, you know, did they bring a parade of food to you while you were laid up with your Achilles tendon? And one of the foods they brought was puffed Cheetos?

Ese Atawo  25:16

Yeah, yeah. Sure, and I liked it. And the thing is, is also I'm putting it in the boyfriend category. He's good and what he does, but yeah, I can't commit.

Molly  25:30

Okay, okay.

Matthew Amster-Burton  25:32

I tried to understand like, what what was like the full range of foods that your friends brought you because either like they brought you a bunch of stuff, and they're great friends or they're like, we're gonna drop off like a couple of baggage bags of chips. Like See, I hope you feel better someday.

Ese Atawo  25:43

No, they brought like, I like candies as well like gummy. Yes. And like Sarah keys. So that was the majority of get better gift. Thank you. Those were the first to go. And it was a small bag of puff puppies. So it's like individual size. Sure. Cheeto sounds like yeah, it's there. Let me just eat it. Yeah,

Matthew Amster-Burton  26:01

let me couldn't afford the big bag. It's like $10 and I wouldn't want them to I would never buy a $10 bag of cappuccinos.

Molly  26:07

Wait a minute. Did you say the words sour keys? Yes. What are sour keywords or that

Ese Atawo  26:13

get off your own podcast?

Molly  26:18

I thought that I mean, I'm a huge fan of sour gummy things. Are these gummy r&b

Ese Atawo  26:23

Be Our mother trucking VIP. Okay,

Molly  26:26

okay, okay.

Matthew Amster-Burton  26:27

Oh, boy. This is the most exciting thing that's ever happened on our show. I

Molly  26:30

am so excited. I'm just a little bit sad that I can actually eat them through the screen.

Ese Atawo  26:37

Alright, what do we got? These are Syrah keys. They're just keys. That's the

Molly  26:41

craziest I've ever seen. That is like the Anteater of keys. Yeah.

Matthew Amster-Burton  26:47

It looks like a graffiti Dick Right?

Molly  26:51

Okay, wait, wait, wait, are they all that long? Is this? Yes.

Ese Atawo  27:00

But there's also very many ones as well.

Molly  27:03

Okay. Yes. Oh, like big gummy flavors in one key.

Ese Atawo  27:09

Yes. orange and orange. No red and green. Okay, yellow and red. orange and red. Okay,

Matthew Amster-Burton  27:17

can you stick one on each finger and be like Freddy or Wolverine?

Ese Atawo  27:21

No, it doesn't really do like the ring thing. It's just like the Yankee if you're

Molly  27:27

very silly. Oh my gosh. Okay. Okay. Is this like a horrible product?

Ese Atawo  27:34

Yes, yes. Yes. Horrible. Also again, horrible please. Your

Matthew Amster-Burton  27:39

premium gummies but they are but

Ese Atawo  27:41

Lori because I'm a working actor. I can afford to buy all that candy. Um, but horrible is the best of candies.

Matthew Amster-Burton  27:49

Oh my god. Oh, yeah. Like this one. He's we know we're gonna get off on a big on a big like gummy candy tangent.

Molly  27:55

Yeah. Okay, Matthew Britt bring us back. Our kids are awesome. Okay, but whose turn

Matthew Amster-Burton  27:59

is it to pick a chip? Oh, I can go. Oh, golly. Ma you There

Molly  28:07

we go. Okay, well, now that we're talking about Cheetos, so crunchy Cheetos. Okay, so crunchy Cheetos is like a more dense version of like the pot kind of situation, right? Yes. And it's also like more densely coated in cheese powder. Right and so Matthew and I have long had kind of a category of excellent foods that we talked about on the show called perfectly engineered products. I believe that the crunchy Cheeto, which I think when I was a kid, I think they were just like Cheetos now they're called crunchy. Yeah, but anyway, I think that's a perfectly engineered food product. I think it's like epically crunchy, epically cheesy. Impossible to stop eating in the best way. And I even like the cheese stuff is flour is flour full enough is flavorful enough that like when it coats your fingers, it's even like it's worth it to lick your fingers. Right? Like there's some things where you lick your fingers and you're like, Oh, that was just like

Ese Atawo  29:12

yeah, no anger. Molly, I have never agreed with a person more than me agreeing with you right now with really crunchy Cheetos you are right is the best manufactured engineer chip in the way Hold on. And every time it hits an error saying it hits an every base and the reason why I am giving it very high praise. I don't need it too often. Okay, who How am I gonna? Ooh, crunchy. Cheetos for me is that sexy Italian Stallion that gets it all the way and knows how to do it and you're very thankful for it. However Do you guys remember because I will always I feel like crunchy Cheetos changed. Oh, no. But I love how I'm relating all my chips. Yeah, no Keep going, I'm with you. But do you know when you meet somebody and they're amazing, then they change without telling you?

Matthew Amster-Burton  30:05

I mean, I've been married for 96 years. So yeah, like

Molly  30:08

Matthew spent there's so many cycles of this. And you

Ese Atawo  30:11

just like who are you now? So I remember crunchy Cheeto. I like it. I like it a lot, but the cheese flavor changed.

Molly  30:20

Interesting. And so it wasn't it wasn't like a good change like when you pretend that your spouse is a stranger so that you can have like a really spicy it wasn't like a good change.

Ese Atawo  30:31

It's like It's like it took off and probably like it took up in properties it's like okay I love improv I perform it all the time it's like this is the this is okay

Molly  30:47

okay, it had before

Ese Atawo  30:48

the cheese has a cool subtle not too cheesy but now it's too cheesy so I don't know what happened with the cheese formula but the cheese formula change so

Matthew Amster-Burton  30:59

as it let me ask you this. How do you feel about Flaming Hot Cheetos? Have you had that? I don't like it. Okay,

Ese Atawo  31:05

I don't hate it but I don't like right because it has like I don't like it anything with like spicy chips I like I roll my eyes I'm obsessed with spice. I'm just like okay spicy chips but it's neither spicy and then it just makes it bad. So

Matthew Amster-Burton  31:19

because like the the kids then I think these kids are all like 25 now like like that was a chip that they that the kids all got into like well after I was a grown up and like you know kids are going around with like their fingers stained red from from Flaming Hot Cheetos at all times. Probably having like masturbation injuries. Okay, so I got a couple of chips recently at the I went to Asian family market in Seattle and they had some some Lay's chips from China. Oh, and I haven't tried these yet. I think I might like I feel bad. Opening them and trying them on the show when you can't have any because we're recording remotely but I might do it anyway because I have here too and Amen. Spicy hot pot flavor now and spicy. Roasted cumin lamb skewer flavor. I think I'm gonna open these roasted cumin lamb skewer flavor chips. I don't know if they're gonna be a favorite chip or not, but I'm gonna find out.

Molly  32:12

Good luck. I love the specificity that it's a lamb skewer. Oh,

Matthew Amster-Burton  32:16

oh, these are really good. Sorry, everyone.

Molly  32:20

How meaty Are they like, can you tell that it's lamb?

Matthew Amster-Burton  32:23

Yeah, they're kind of meaty.

Molly  32:24

Are they gamey?

Matthew Amster-Burton  32:25

Huh? They're not gaming. I do think this is a chip that that is going to be a summer boyfriend. Okay, first of all, because I can only get them at one particular Chinese supermarket. But also because like, there's the kind that like hits you with the flavor right up front. You're like Wow, that really does taste like a cumin lamb skewer I think and then and then after a few more, it's gonna be like, and now I'm ready to move on to something else. But they are good.

Ese Atawo  32:48

I bought some chips. Also, please. I bought ketchup chips. Not from Lay's because I can't get them anymore. Lay's Please lower your prices. That is the President's choice. A Canadian company. Oh, yes. Loads of ketchup. So I'd like to hear Jeff. Gross. I

Matthew Amster-Burton  33:09

prefer to buy a chip that has words loads on the label ketchup.

Ese Atawo  33:12

I'm nervous.

Molly  33:14

Okay. Okay, I want to see it.

Ese Atawo  33:16

It's like it smells like a normal ketchup.

Matthew Amster-Burton  33:18

It's very pink.

Molly  33:20

I know. It's like a rose petal A color though.

Ese Atawo  33:22

It's not just not look the same as ways. It's more like shiny or with their ketchup.

Molly  33:29

Yes. Okay.

Ese Atawo  33:30

Okay, I'm nervous. I'm so nervous. Wish me luck.

Molly  33:33

You're about to put a load in your mouth.

Ese Atawo  33:34

No

Molly  33:40

sorry. Sorry,

Matthew Amster-Burton  33:44

what else is this summer boyfriend for

Molly  33:47

throw in a good way,

Matthew Amster-Burton  33:50

or is it a hurdle?

Molly  33:53

Okay. Oh, I wish I could have one.

Ese Atawo  33:58

Yeah, I want to I want to represent this. This is not Canada SketchUp

Matthew Amster-Burton  34:03

yet. When it goes upside down next year next to the washing machine and when we come up to Vancouver we'll come back

Ese Atawo  34:12

two years be moldy.

Molly  34:15

Right over that's what you do. Oh, that's so disappointing his ways

Matthew Amster-Burton  34:25

I have another question. When when you know how like lays especially sighs we'll do like you know we've got three new wacky chip flavors for you you know this season only do you try those when it happens like a chicken and waffles or like chicken strip or something? Because

Ese Atawo  34:39

I used to follow the ketchup flavor trends when I cared about Doritos chips, even though still the same lays lays lowering your prices. But then I was just like, No, I don't hate them. They're good, but I'm just like, I'm too old for this shit.

Matthew Amster-Burton  34:55

Yeah. That's my feeling exactly. Like I'm too old to learn to like a new a whole new kind of

Ese Atawo  35:01

If my nephews or nieces or somebody gives me a chance, okay, I'll learn those new churn that

Matthew Amster-Burton  35:07

day just so you can like bond with them over something

Ese Atawo  35:12

bondings over

Molly  35:14

and I want to know Matthew what the other chips tastes like the other ones you go okay.

Matthew Amster-Burton  35:20

I'm not sure where I put them even though this room is very small.

Molly  35:25

Yeah. To be clear Matthew is in a bathroom that he has converted into like a podcasting studio in his

Matthew Amster-Burton  35:33

okay. I'm good news. I found the other bag of chips. Yeah, I guess these are the dumb and spicy hot pot flavors. So I think they're supposed to like be like a 70s hot pot. Hmm.

Molly  35:46

So have you noticed that Matthew's a very fast cruncher his natural crunching speed is extremely fast. Realize that I have a guinea pig who lives in my house who has a pet and Matthews crunching is on par with the speed of a guinea pig. Wow, I've never told him that before.

Matthew Amster-Burton  36:08

Wow, thank you.

Molly  36:11

Okay, Matthew, what do you think

Matthew Amster-Burton  36:13

they really do have that kind of like spicy set 20s hot pot flavor. I don't like it in a chip context. I want the actual hot pot. I think the cumin lamb skewers much better.

Ese Atawo  36:23

Okay, I mean you a four to five chips. Before you knew that I had one ketchup chips. I was like, no, no,

Matthew Amster-Burton  36:31

I think I just have like, like a highly developed like chip eating muscle memory. Like, I'm not gonna eat just one chip because my hand is already doing this thing. You know this thing?

Molly  36:44

You know, I want to talk a little bit about Vancouver really quick. Okay, because we've I mean, we've covered a lot of chips. A lot of chips. Yeah. So what do you like to eat in Vancouver? Your your adopted hometown? Other than chips.

Ese Atawo  36:59

Okay, so, Molly Massey, you caught me in a weird time. Yeah, I was the girl that always Uber Eats was my best friend. BFF you know, Scott me all day every day. However, Uber Eats is expensive. Yeah, I can't afford to be eating out all the time. Yeah, so now I'm forced to cook my dinners. And they've been good. They've been good. And I realized I actually realized that I'm a pretty good cook. So I'm just like, okay, so it's been fun cooking for myself and cooking anything that I want. I made these really cool beans yesterday, and I had beans and rice

Matthew Amster-Burton  37:37

Cool beans. That's good. Okay, but say say like your cast is like you know Canadian James Bond and and like, you know, you you make it big. And you can order whatever you want for UberEATS what what would you get?

Ese Atawo  37:49

I got into lobster tail and my friends. And I never had lobster tail before. And I was like, Wow, I love this chick. What magic is lobster tail? And then so I love lobsters now so lobster tail. I will eat all day or day. A good chicken and yeah, it's a great chicken does do the chicken. Well, any good chicken. I'm good. Good chicken. I'm not getting no I'm not into steaks. I'm not gonna lie. I'm not into steak. So I'm fine with that. Potatoes. Give me a potato any type of potato? I mean, yeah.

Molly  38:21

What about potato

Ese Atawo  38:22

and? Oh butene Yes, that's a Canadian staple. Yeah. Which is good. I actually have cheese curds in my freezer. So I guess I'll probably make a butene proteins Great. Canadian bacon. I don't I'm not into bacon. I don't hate it. But I'm not into it. Yeah, Puccini. I would Yeah, I would wrap the routine. Yeah. Come to Canada.

Matthew Amster-Burton  38:44

We've been I've been asked many times to do a routine episode where like we need to like go to Canada and research before we do this because we're not going to be like you know, so many people who

Ese Atawo  38:53

claim to be putting heads so you just can't Don't call me in that episode. Okay, you're gonna have the many okay many people sending you hate mail. But why would you she doesn't know anything about she's potatoes and you have her on your

Matthew Amster-Burton  39:08

butt. On the on the other side counterpoint. You're the only person we know in Canada.

Ese Atawo  39:15

But But yeah, it's great. And even I'm saying it wrong even it's like

Molly  39:22

yeah, I think you've done a beautiful job.

Matthew Amster-Burton  39:26

All right. Well, thank you so much for joining us. This was having me one of the most delightful experiences I've had in recent memory. Ah, I got I got to eat chips with my friends. Yeah,

Molly  39:39

and I think we may have finally gotten through delays but time will Yes,

Matthew Amster-Burton  39:43

that's a good point. They're gonna they're gonna hear this right now like we haven't even aired the episode yet. Right now someone at the lays lays headquarters they can just feel that there's going to be a change yeah be

Ese Atawo  39:54

of the people because I don't want to be eating ketchup chips. I have lingering tastes have cinnamon,

Matthew Amster-Burton  40:01

you don't have to buy chips that have that has the word loads.

Ese Atawo  40:06

I remember when I went to America years ago, and I was looking for ketchup chips, and I was in this grocery store looking for ketchup chips, and I saw this sales clerk. And I was like, hi, I mean to your like, where your chips like ketchup? Do you have ketchup chips? Because I thought maybe it's sold out in America or this grocery store with that. And then he's like ketchup chips, and I guess he's like, Well, chips are on aisle eight. And there's ketchup and all 10 I'm like, oh

Matthew Amster-Burton  40:39

take a brush, like, paint the chips in the oven.

Molly  40:43

Never come back to the US again. Ever since never.

Ese Atawo  40:45

I've never been blasphemous when he said.

Molly  40:52

Well, thank you so much. Is there anything? Is there anything you'd like to plug?

Ese Atawo  40:55

Listen to live? acquittee on all the thing.

Matthew Amster-Burton  40:59

Absolutely do it's hilarious. Hilarious. And like actually good. Rapping Oh, together.

Ese Atawo  41:05

Okay. It's just a silly comedy. A girl who's sad. It's really funny. Listen to it as not real rap. Don't take it seriously. It's a joke. And yeah.

Molly  41:16

Thank you so much. Thank you. Oh, man, that was so fun.

Matthew Amster-Burton  41:23

That was so great. I hope I hope we can convince essay to come back on multiple times.

Molly  41:28

Thank you Ese Atawo. Okay, so Matthew, it's time for sales mix.

Matthew Amster-Burton  41:34

Yes. Okay, Molly, do we have any spilled mail we do.

Molly  41:45

So listener blue, has sent us the following message. I have been a dedicated listener since the jump. I've loved every episode, even when you guys are being super silly. And don't think anyone's listening. I'm listening. Oh, this is so heartening. Anyways, the fortune cookie story in the last episode prompted me to finally write to you after all these years, Matthew. I also used to add in bed at the end of all Fortune cookies until I got kicked out of church camp for telling all the other kids about it. best decision I ever made. Also, I enjoy eating sushi by picking all the individual ingredients out of it and then once the insides are gone, I dip the rice and nori in soy sauce. I know it's wrong, but it feels so right. Oh,

Matthew Amster-Burton  42:31

well. Thank you listener blue. Glad we got you kicked out of church camp. I think that was the chronology right? Yeah, it was our fault it was our okay yeah,

Molly  42:39

let's let's claim this one. Listener blue. I hope we get to demolish some sushi with you one day.

Matthew Amster-Burton  42:46

Yes. But but will will avert our eyes. Yes.

Molly  42:49

Okay, Matthew, do you have a now but wow

Matthew Amster-Burton  43:00

I do. My my now but wow. This week is called the legend of Auntie Po by shinian core and Xingjian core is a author of of graphic novels. And her first one was kind of a road trip memoir that is very good. But this one is, it's a fusion of a Chinese folk tale with the tale of Paul Bunyan. And it is set among Chinese Americans at a California logging camp in the 19th century. It's a really good story. But one thing that I really liked about it is that it really centers the Chinese American protagonist who is who is a queer girl whose father is the cook at the login camp. But there is also like a, a white character who struggles with how to be anti racist. And you get to see like the the the white character like succeed and fail at like navigating, you know, the the racial hegemony of this time. But even though like that character gets to have like the anti racist, epiphany kind of moment, that is not the focus of the book. And I thought that was really refreshing night that the book really stays centered on on this girl who is at the heart of the story.

Molly  44:10

Fantastic. Okay, would you say the name of it again?

Matthew Amster-Burton  44:12

It's called the legend of anti Po by Shingon. Core. Nice. Okay. And oh, okay. Wait. Yeah, we sign off. Yeah. Very important news.

Molly  44:21

We recently put up a Google poll, in response to our episode about cooking smells, or as part of our episode right cooking smells. We asked

Matthew Amster-Burton  44:31

whatever volume response to our own.

Molly  44:36

Okay, we asked, Do you have a working exhaust fan in your kitchen and I truly cannot believe it. But 131 listeners responded to this poll. And the best part is so so producer Abby put it up on Google for us. And it's phrased like this. Do you have a working exhaust fan in your kitchen and your three choices are Yes, yes, but it doesn't work. No

Matthew Amster-Burton  45:06

I just one of the options is yes, my working exhaust fan doesn't work. Yeah, like people are hanging on the edge of their seats. They want to know what what the numbers are.

Molly  45:15

I felt like the bottom line of this whole poll is that people actually did it. I love our listeners. Oh, so we're not gonna release the results. We are gonna really okay so it's all right Matthew. So it lets a little drumroll here

Matthew Amster-Burton  45:28

dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby. Okay, the drumroll

Molly  45:31

so 57 listeners wrote in to say they do I have a working exhaust fan in their kitchen. That's 57 listeners out of 131 42 listeners have a working exhaust fan but it doesn't work. Okay. I love this. Anyway, okay. 42 out of 131 and then 32 out of 141 do not have a working exhaust fan. And that would be me. All right. I have 32 people

Matthew Amster-Burton  46:01

I'm in I'm in the 42 that might Yes, I have one but it doesn't work and I think I would really say yes, it's a working exhaust fan. That doesn't work because it makes the noise I'm like a fan is doing something but nothing happens like the cooking smells and smoke don't go anywhere.

Molly  46:14

Well, this was really instructive. I honestly I'm really was. I'm surprised that people are that we had as much variety in answers as we do.

Matthew Amster-Burton  46:23

Yeah, I learned so much from them. So much feed to Okay, wait, I have one more segment. Oh, let me hit you with this. What's new in Spira?

Molly  46:38

Oh, right. Okay,

Matthew Amster-Burton  46:40

this is the segment where I tell you what's going on in the game Final Fantasy 10. So if you haven't played the game yet, spoiler alert, you might want to fast forward, I completed the cloister of trials at the temple of josei and got a magic sphere. And a new Aon, whose name I don't remember. And now we're all going to move on to somewhere else and fight something else.

Molly  47:01

Oh, congratulations. Is that the right answer? That's the right response. Yeah, okay. Yeah,

Matthew Amster-Burton  47:06

it sure is. So the right dates as events warrant top of the hour, I'll be updating you.

Molly  47:12

Hey, Matthew. Hey, I haven't mentioned it yet. But uh, but our listeners might want to know that while we're recording this episode, I'm wearing a sweater that I knit myself.

Matthew Amster-Burton  47:21

Molly  47:23

No, this is this is not knitting close knit family know about

Matthew Amster-Burton  47:33

Matthew Amster-Burton  48:40

It's because si reading chips and you didn't have any
